Why we do this work

Our Mission

Tango Mercurio is an arts education organization presenting Argentine tango as an agent of community development — promoting cultural understanding and social cohesion through ongoing public opportunities for dance, music, learning, and community engagement.

What We Do

One mission, diverse programming

In 2025, Tango Mercurio fulfilled its mission through two major programs: Dance—which includes classes and events—and Community Outreach, which includes our Adapted Tango Program for people with Parkinson’s disease (as part of our Older Adult Outreach Program), our “Tango Talks,” and free programs for veterans and underserved communities in DC. In addition, we expanded our Live Music program, with three performances by the Tango Mercurio Ensemble.

Dance Program

Message from the Artistic Director

Tango Mercurio’s dance school is one of the largest Argentine tango schools in North America in terms of number of students and instructors. As Executive Director, I lead our artistic activities and Dance Education Program, overseeing a team of experienced local teachers.

“Tango gave me a community, not just a hobby — I found lifelong friends on that dance floor.”

Marisol Vega, Dance Program student

Many of our dancers have been with the program for years — coming back for the community as much as the craft.

Live Music Program

Message from the Live Music Program Manager

Since 2008, Tango Mercurio has worked to make Argentine tango a vibrant and welcoming part of the cultural life of Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Through programs in dance, music, and culture, we strive to build connections, deepen cultural understanding, and make tango accessible to a wide and diverse community—from experienced dancers to complete beginners, and especially to those who might not otherwise have access to these artistic traditions.

“Hearing the bandoneón live changes everything. You feel the tango, not just hear it.”

Thomas Whitfield, Live Music Program attendee

Audience members consistently tell us the live ensemble is what turns a milonga into an unforgettable night.

Adapted Tango Program

Message from the Adapted Tango Program Manager

Since 2018 I’ve led Tango Mercurio’s Older Adult Outreach Program, and our Adapted Tango Program has grown directly out of that work — bringing the connection, movement, and musicality of Argentine tango to older adults living with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

Alexandra Russell — Youth and Older Adult Outreach Program Manager

What Programs We Have

Five programs, built around 2023’s restructuring

In 2023 we organized our work into five interconnected program areas that use tango to build community, expand access to the arts, and serve underserved groups across the DMV area.

Some key highlights are:

  1. 1

We scheduled events in our regular programming to celebrate Black History Month, Pride Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month.

  2. 2

We engaged the community with dialogues about the cultural heritage of social Argentine tango in Buenos Aires, the history of tango lyrics, and the art of DJing tango music, and will soon host dialogues on how tango dancing can influence leadership-followership roles and teamwork in everyday life, as well as what it takes to bring live music to a milonga.

  3. 3

We pursued three major mission-aligned stakeholders in our target communities: The Anacostia Arts Center, Dance Place, and Joy of Motion, overlapping some of our programming and classes at their respective venues. The community dialogue and events are offered for free or at a very subsidized ticket price, to allow equitable access to everyone in the community.

  4. 4

We allocated administrative resources towards planning and facilitating strategy discussions, conducting outreach excursions to individuals and organizations within these wards, and hosting dance performances and free classes.

  5. 5

In May 2025 we offered a tango bootcamp to the members of the Armed Services Arts Partnership. Two dance instructors from Joy of Motion attended our tango bootcamp with an objective of training to become tango instructors in their own community.
